The Gem
Julia Jacklin
4AD
The fourth studio album from Julia Jacklin, The Gem marks her debut release on 4AD — and her most intimate record yet. Produced by Jacklin and Robert Muinos and recorded entirely in Melbourne at Rat Shack Studios (located, fittingly, above the bar that inspired the album's title), it's a ten-track document of love, freedom, and the tension between the two.
Recorded with a tight-knit band of friends — Jacob Diamond (guitar), Mimi Gilbert (bass), and Jess Elwood (drums) — the album opens up new sonic territory for Jacklin, blending jangly eighties rock with the warmth of the Melbourne pub scene she fell in love with. Lead single Get Away From Me (I Think I'll Love You Soon) announces the change in direction with characteristic wit and confidence.
